Free Collar Pattern for the Sunny Dress

It's that time of year again when Melly Sews hosts the 30 Days of Sundresses series! If you aren't familiar with the series, then you'll definitely want to start following along and look back at all the previous posts so far to grab some great free patterns and tutorials for sewing sundresses.

Sundresses are one of my daughter's absolute favorite things to wear during the summer, and they are one of my favorite things to sew! This is my fourth year participating in the series, and this time, I've decided to create a FREE Collar Pattern piece and tutorial to go along with my Sunny Dress & Top Pattern. You are going to love the additional look you can create with both my FREE and PAID versions of the pattern.

Here's a look at the whole Sunny Dress with the collar add-on. Isn't it just perfect?!

Disclosure: I was provided some of the fabrics used in this post free of charge in exchange for use in a blog post. This post also contains affiliate links. All opinions are 100% my own.

Want to sew up this adorable and comfy sundress? Then all you need to do first is download my FREE Sunny Dress Pattern for sizes 5, 6, and 7 or PURCHASE the Sunny Dress & Top Pattern for sizes 2T - 12 (on sale for $5) using the links below. The latter pattern also includes pattern markings and instructions for sewing a top/tunic version or dress and offers two views of both either with or without a neck ruffle.

Supplies for the Collar:
  • Approximately 1/4 yard fabric
  • Approximately 1/4 lightweight fusible interfacing
  • Normal sewing supplies and equipment

Print the collar pattern piece and cut out the following:
  • 4 collar pieces (2 sets of mirrored pieces) in fabric
  • 2 mirrored collar pieces in interfacing
Follow the pattern instructions or tutorial to construct the dress or top and skip the Assemble the Neck Ruffle instructions and use the Assemble the Collar instructions below instead:

Assemble the Collar:

Skip the Attach the Neck Ruffle to the Front pattern instructions and use the Attach the Collar to the Front instructions below instead.

Attach the Collar to the Front:

Continue following the pattern instructions for creating the bias binding and attaching it to neckline. Your completed collar should now look like this!

See how easy it was to create the collar and sew it on to the Sunny Dress? This is such a fun feature and another great option for this pattern.

The Sunny Dress is the perfect staple piece for summer, and with so many options (dress, top, neck ruffle, no ruffle, and collar) that you can mix up the look enough to create a versitile mini-wardrobe! This latest Sunny Dress addition to Ella's closet is sewn with this pretty floral print from Blend Fabrics.

Be sure to follow along all month with the 30 Days of Sundresses series at Melly Sews for more free sundress tutorials and patterns!

Thanks for stopping by and have FUN sewing!

  2. Cute! I just printed the Sunny out again, once for my older daughter (she is turning 4 this year! How the time flies!) and once for my younger daughter who is almost 1.
